Strings, and nothing else
A solo violin or a small string group, no reinforcement, no truss. In a canyon this quiet the acoustic instrument is the whole design, and a microphone for the officiant is the only thing we add.
Before anyone sits down
A single player or a DJ held low while guests move between the room and the terrace. The bar is the loudest thing in the space and it should stay that way.
Speeches, with the room lit for them
Mirrored tables, floating candles and a lot of drape absorbing sound. Speech audio is placed for the tables rather than for the floor, and the uplighting comes down while people are eating.
When the ring closes in
The floor here is one lacquered rectangle in the middle of the tables, so the crowd forms a ring around it almost immediately. That is a gift if you programme for it and a problem if you do not.
The last stretch
Colour on the drape, the chandeliers left up, and a set that stays on the right side of a hotel with rooms above it. Volume discipline is part of the job at this address.
A small room, which is the whole point
Hotel Bel-Air sits at the end of Stone Canyon Road behind a stand of sycamores, and its ballroom is nothing like the Beverly Hills hotels we work in. The ceiling is vaulted with beams radiating from the centre, starburst chandeliers hang between them, and the walls are drape from floor to ceiling. It is intimate rather than grand, and it rewards restraint.
Our bookings here reflect that. Alongside the weddings there is a proposal, a baby shower and a pair of daytime parties, and the talent list runs to solo violin and strings as often as it runs to a DJ. When we do bring a band, as we have with Rouge, they are close enough to the guests that the room does the amplifying.

Uplighting in a drape-lined room
Every wall in this ballroom is fabric, which means uplighting behaves completely differently here than it does against plaster. Colour spreads and softens instead of bouncing, and a beam that would look sharp elsewhere just disappears into the folds. Is a full band too much for this ballroom?
Not necessarily, and we have put one in here. But it is a genuine question at this address rather than a formality, and we will give you a straight answer once we know your guest count and how the room is being set.
Can you do just ceremony music?
Yes. Solo violin and small string groups are among the things this venue has booked from us most, on their own, with no reception attached.
