The Queen Mary, the retired ocean liner moored across the harbor from downtown, is the best-known example. Older rooms tend to have narrow corridors, fixed stages and rules that protect the interiors.

Charter yachts and harbor cruises leave from marinas such as Shoreline Village and Alamitos Bay. Deck space is small, and the event starts when the boat leaves.

What time does amplified music have to stop?
The band plans its last set around that time instead of being cut off mid-song.
Is there a sound limit, and who measures it?
When a room caps volume, a lighter lineup often sounds better than a loud one turned down.
Where and when does the band load in?
Docks, freight elevators and valet lanes all run on schedules, and some close once guests arrive.
Where is the nearest power, and is it a separate circuit?
A band should never share a circuit with catering equipment such as coffee urns or warming ovens.
How much space is set aside for the band?
The footprint decides how many players fit, and whether horns and a drum kit can stand together.
Is in-house audio required?
If it is, the band connects to the venue’s system rather than bringing a separate one.
Will guests be outdoors at some point, and what happens if the weather turns?
Near the water, an evening breeze and marine layer are common, and instruments need a covered place if weather turns.
What paperwork do vendors need?
Many venues ask vendors for proof of insurance, and events in public parks or on beaches generally need a city permit. Ask early so paperwork doesn’t delay the date.
